Shopping for Authentic Baseball Card Autographs
![]() |
Baseball is a beloved American pastime and has been for many years. The collection of baseball cards itself has been a favorite hobby of children and adults for just as long. Many collectors prefer autographed baseball cards whenever possible. An autographed card will always be worth more than an unsigned card of the same player. If you're looking to buy cards from a dealer or collector, there are a few ways to ensure you're buying authentic Baseball Card Autographs.
Before you examine the card, examine the dealer. Are they a member of a professional association? Legitimate autograph dealers should belong to at least one or perhaps more than one organization such as the Universal Autograph Collectors Club (UACC), the Professional Autograph Dealer Association (PADA) or the International Autograph Collectors Club (IACC). Organizations like these are devoted to screening autograph dealers and ensuring they meet certain requirements.
When you buy an autographed card, make sure it comes with a lifetime guarantee. This means that if the card is later found to be not authentic, you can return it to the dealer for a full refund of the purchase price. Another thing you'll want to look for is a certificate of authenticity from a legitimate agency. Examples of legitimate authentication agencies include PSA/DNA, Upper Deck Authenticated (UDA), Steiner, Superstar Sports, TriStar and Green Diamond. Any other agency should be approached with caution as there have been unscrupulous agencies in the past who performed false authentication. Several of them were even prosecuted by the FBI, such as SCAA, FDS and Donald Frangipani. Knowingly offering forged autographs is a serious offense.
If you choose to shop for authentic Baseball Card Autographs online, be very careful. It can be hard to tell a real autograph from a fake simply by looking at it online. A good online seller will offer authentication from one of the above listed companies and give a lifetime guarantee. If they don't, you shouldn't buy from them. The unfortunate fact is that a large number of autographs from sports stars and other celebrities are fake. If you want to purchase a valuable card that does not come with appropriate authentication, request the card and the money be held in escrow while you have the authentication process performed. This is the only way to really know if the autographed card is real or fake.
