The Allure of Hollywood Autographs
![]() |
Collecting Hollywood autographs can be fun and exciting for fans and collectors alike. Some people collect autographs for investment purposes, while others do it because they're fans looking for something personal from their favorite star. Still others collect autographs because they are interested in interpreting the handwriting of various celebrities. Regardless of why you are seeking an autograph or autographs, there are some tips that can help you succeed.
The first thing you'll need to do is choose a celebrity. If you've got a favorite star, this is easy to do. If you're looking to build an autograph collection, you will need to make a list. It is going to be a lot easier to obtain autographs from lesser-known or up and coming artists than it will be to get the signatures of superstars. For example, you may not be able to easily obtain an autograph from megastar Julia Roberts. But you just might be able to get an autograph from her less-recognizable actor relatives Eric Roberts or Emma Roberts. The good thing about the up and comers or less notable celebs is that their signatures may increase in value over time as they become more famous. Not to say you can't get the autograph of a superstar -- many top celebrities are avid autograph signers.
Some celebs have fan clubs and secretaries that handle sending out signed photos. The problem here is that often, the celebs will have their assistants or secretaries sign the photos for them. This is called a secretarial autograph and is not worth much to either a fan or collector. Another problem you may come across are pre-printed autographs, which are basically just photocopies of an original. Rubber stamping and the use of an autopen machine are two more types of autograph fraud you'll want to look out for. The more autographs you collect, the more experienced you'll become at spotting fakes.
Whether you send off for Hollywood autographs, obtain them in person, or buy them from other collectors, you'll find that the pursuit of famous signatures can become addictive! Once you get one autograph, you might decide you want more of them. Keep your autographs in a safe place away from heat, light and moisture. This way, they will stay preserved longer. If you ever choose to sell them in the future, you'll want them in the best condition possible.
