How to Collect Movie Autographs
![]() |
Philography is a fancy term for autograph collecting, and it is a hobby enjoyed by many. Some individuals go beyond hobbyist collecting and turn their pursuit for famous signatures into a thriving business. There are many different types of autographs that people collect. For example, some collectors may prefer the autographs of sports stars, while others may specialize in musicians signatures. One popular category is that of movie autographs.
Famous actors and actresses are some of the most sought after individuals when it comes to autographs. They can also be some of the most elusive. How likely you are to obtain a movie star's autograph depends on various factors. The celebrity's personality is one such factor. Some stars are happy to sign autographs while others are quite unhappy when approached for a signature. To learn more about which celebrities are good signers and which are not, try joining an autograph collecting message board. There you can network with other collectors and find out more about your favorite stars.
Some collectors have particular celebs in mind when they begin autograph hunting. Others happen to be in the right place at the right time and end up with a random autograph. Movie premieres are great places to obtain autographs in person. However, the chances are still quite slim because celebrities often have a short amount of time to sign autographs and many fans waiting for them. You might have a better chance of getting the autograph you seek if you write to request it.
Most celebrities can be sent correspondence through their talent agent or public relations representative. Whether or not the celebrity will read your correspondence will depend on the volume of letters they receive and their policy on fan mail. When writing for an autograph, use a sufficient sized mailing envelope and enclose the movie photo you want signed, a brief letter requesting the autograph and a self-addressed stamped envelope. Some stars make it a practice of actually responding to their fan mail, but a response might take awhile.
Some movie autographs are worth a pretty penny. Some collectors seek out vintage autographs from other collectors. For example, autographs from stars like James Dean, Elvis Presley, Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable and Cary Grant are extra valuable and rare because the stars are not only legendary, but deceased. Many of the autographs you get from stars today may gain value in years to come, others may not. The speculation is one reason so many collectors enjoy the pursuit of autograph collecting.
